Alright folks, gather ‘round! Tonight’s cinematic snack is a little indie darling called “Once.” Yes, the one with the busker and the flower seller. Prepare for raw emotion, questionable fashion choices, and music that’ll have you humming along… probably off-key.
Once (2006) - The Movie… and the Heartstrings
Let’s be honest, this movie probably cost less than my last grocery run, but it packs a punch! It’s about two musicians who meet in Dublin, bond over their shared love of music, and write some incredibly catchy tunes. Prepare for longing looks, awkward silences, and the undeniable feeling that you should probably learn to play the guitar… eventually.
The “Falling Slowly” Breakfast Sandwich - Because Music Needs Fuel
Watching Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová strum their way into our hearts can work up an appetite. And since we’re aiming for the same raw, simple beauty, let’s whip up a breakfast sandwich that’s both satisfying and easy to make. Think of it as the musical equivalent of comfort food.
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of your favorite bread (artisan is appreciated, but even the cheapest white bread will do… just like the movie!)
- 1 egg
- 1 slice of cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, provolone – whatever floats your boat)
- 1 slice of ham or bacon (optional, but highly encouraged. We need some pizzazz!)
- Butter or cooking spray
- Salt and pepper to taste
- (Optional) A dash of hot sauce, because life needs a little spice.
Instructions:
- First, find that sad little frying pan hiding in the back of your cupboard. It’s time for it to shine!
- Lightly butter or spray your pan and heat it over medium heat. Seriously, medium. Don’t try to get fancy and burn everything.
- Crack that egg into the pan. If you manage to get shell in there, don’t worry. Just fish it out like you’re trying to disarm a bomb.
- Cook the egg to your liking. Sunny-side up? Over easy? Scrambled because you messed up the other two? It’s all good!
- While the egg is cooking, lightly toast your bread. Or don’t. Nobody’s judging (much).
- Once the egg is almost done, slap that slice of cheese on top. Let it melt into a gooey, cheesy masterpiece.
- If you’re using ham or bacon, now’s the time to add it to the pan to warm it up. Crispy bacon is the only exception to the “no fancy stuff” rule.
- Carefully remove the egg and cheese from the pan and place it on one slice of toast. Add your ham/bacon if you’re feeling extra.
- Top with the other slice of toast and, BAM! You’ve got yourself a “Falling Slowly” Breakfast Sandwich.
- Add a dash of hot sauce for those moments in the movie when you wanted them to get together already.
- Devour while re-watching “Once” and pretend you’re in Dublin. Or at least that you know how to play guitar.
Enjoy your sandwich, enjoy the movie, and remember: even the simplest things can be incredibly beautiful. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go practice my busking skills.
