Edward’s Shepherd’s Pie… with a Secret!

Ingredients you need, listen carefully:

  • 1 lb Ground Lamb (or Beef, both okay!)
  • 1 large Onion, chop chop!
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced very fine
  • 1 Carrot, small dice. Need colorful!
  • 1 Celery stalk, same as carrot. Small dice!
  • 1 cup Frozen Peas. Green good for you!
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) Diced Tomatoes, undrained. Juice important!
  • 1 cup Beef Broth (or Chicken Broth, both okay!)
  • 2 tbsp Soy Sauce. Secret ingredient!
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce. Another secret!
  • 1 tsp Dried Thyme. Smell so good!
  • 1 tsp Dried Rosemary. Make flavor complex!
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste. Not too much, not too little!
  • For the Mash: 2 lbs Potatoes, peeled and cubed. Need good mash potato!
  • 1/2 cup Milk. Make mash creamy!
  • 4 tbsp Butter. Butter make everything better!
  • Pinch of Nutmeg. Just a little bit!
  • Optional: Sesame oil (just a drizzle)

Instructions? Easy peasy!

  1. First, make meat good. In big pan, cook lamb (or beef) on medium heat. Break it up, make it brown. Drain extra fat, don’t need that!
  2. Add onion and garlic to pan. Cook until soft, maybe 5 minutes. Smell good, yes?
  3. Throw in carrot and celery. Cook 3 more minutes. Need veggie soft!
  4. Now add tomatoes, beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and rosemary. Stir it good! Bring to boil, then turn down heat. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Make sauce thick!
  5. Add peas. Cook until they warm, maybe 2 minutes.
  6. While meat cook, make potato. Boil potatoes in salted water until soft. Drain water.
  7. Mash potatoes with milk, butter, and nutmeg. Make it smooth and creamy! Maybe little salt and pepper too.
  8. Now, build pie! Put meat mixture in bottom of oven-safe dish. Spread potato mash on top. Make pretty swirls with fork!
  9. Bake in oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes. Until potato golden brown!
  10. If you want extra flavor, drizzle little sesame oil on top before baking. Make it special!
  11. Let cool a little before eat. Hot hot hot!
